Medieval Fairs
A big fan of historical recreation events, I have participated in dozens of medieval, renaissance, and 19th century fairs, and I learned that the most important thing is that those who listen to me can share an experience and not just a few songs.
With that in mind, I resort to various strategies to better embody the bard image, which in this context the harp always conveys. From period vocabulary, to using popular stories or improvising stories as I play, I stay true to the character. But more importantly, I give my audience the choice of songs they want to hear. I have a vast repertoire, close to sixty songs, and I can switch between sad pieces or from slow to fast, syncopated dances. Soon groups form, some want dances, others lament, and of course there is ample opportunity for satire, which is always welcome for a good laugh in a medieval context.
